A Note on Wild Crafting

The flora which our countryside offers, is both a rich pantry and medicine chest, one which has been employed and enjoyed for centuries. It is only in recent years, over the last generation or two that this knowledge has become a forgotten skill. I believe it is our rightful heritage and one which we must not only benefit from but pass on to our children. With the help of nature we have the ability to help heal ourselves.

I would however like to emphasise to the wild crafter that only plants growing in profusion should be harvested and then only in amounts that will not damage the overall viability of the colony. It must look like you were never there!
It is helpful to keep in mind the following:

  • Permission from the landowner
  • Sustainable picking
  • Beware of endangered species
  • Only pick what you will use
  • Ask the plants permission!
  • Always pick with an experienced person, if in doubt leave it out
  • Pick above doggie height!
  • Buy a comprehensive wild flower botany book
  • Digital camera
  • Appropriate clothing
  • Basket or cloth bags
  • Gloves
  • Magnifying glass
  • Pen knife
  • Pick at appropriate time of day and weather
